Hugo Wertheim migrated from Frankfurt, Germany to Melbourne, Australia as a reasonably wealthy man, in 1875 after being sent by his uncle, Joseph Wertheim, to travel the world as an agent for the family's sewing machine business. He opened two showrooms in Bourke & Collins Streets, importing German goods such as pianos, harmoniums and bicycles. 1990s Kentucky KM-250S Mandolin 1990s Kentucky KM-250S Mandolin (Serial No. 12200) Excellent condition. ANTIQUE JOSEF WERTHEIM HIGH ARM TREADLE SEWING MACHINE. Serial Number: S6276379 Circa: late 1890 - 1910 A smaller, neat sized Wertheim treadle, complete with attractive cover & iron base. It belonged to my grandmother, so have estimated the age at around 1890’s. Cover of pin holder has symbol ‘Wings above a shield’. Maker’s trademark on gold oval disc, “WERTHEIM / FRANCFURT” and picture of a dwarf with a hammer. Left footplate has script “Syst 182”, right footplate has stamp in oval shape “MANUFACTURED IN -/SPECIALLY FOR / HUGO WERTHEIM” Serial Number “7501” Last updated.

- The 'Mother's Help' machine was made in Germany by Hengstenburg (later Anker) for export, primarily to the UK. It has a transverse, boat-shaped shuttle - modeled on the Singer 12 - and also takes a 12x1 needle.
